A ball rolls off the top of a stairway

Asked by admin @ in Physics viewed by 278 People

A ball rolls off the top of a stairway with a velocity u. If the height of each step is h, the breadth is b and the ball hits the edge of nth steps, the find the value of n.

Answered by admin @

As the horizontal initial velocity is u and there is no force acting on ball in X direction

horizontal distance traveled by ball = nb which implies t=nb/u ........1

vertical initial velocity = 0 and vertical distance traveled is nh
nh = 1/2*g*t²  ..................2

replace t from 1 in eq 2.
nh = 1/2*g*(nb/u)² and solve for n

n = 2hu²/gb²
