The French Connection

Popeyes is a chain of fried chicken fast-food restaurants founded in New Orleans in 1972. Everyone assumes that Popeyes is named after the spinach-eating comic strip character, but the name was actually inspired by a fictional '70s detective. Popeyes founder Al Copeland named his fast-food chain after Popeye Doyle, Gene Hackman's character in the film “The French Connection”. The film had been popular at the time that Copeland launched his first Popeyes restaurant. Copeland was said to be a big fan of the film’s leading character.
