भारत त्योहारों का देश है। यहां वर्षभर कोई न कोई त्यौहार आता ही रहता है। यह त्योहार हर्ष और प्रसन्नता के प्रतीक होते हैं। भारत में बहुत से ऐसे त्यौहार हैं जिनका संबंध ऋतु तथा महान पुरुषों के साथ है ।ऐसे त्यौहारों में से दीपावली प्रमुख त्यौहार है।

दीपावली का अर्थ है दीपों की पंक्ति। यह कार्तिक मास की अमावस्या को मनाया जाता है लोग दीपों की पंक्तियां जलाकर अमावस्या की रात को रोशन कर देते हैं। दीपावली 5 दिन तक मनाई जाती है।

कहा जाता है कि इस दिन श्री रामचंद्र जी 14 वर्ष के वनवास के पश्चात अयोध्या लौटे थे और अयोध्या वासियों ने उनके आने की खुशी में अपने घरों में प्रकाश किया था। इस दिन सिखों के छठे गुरु श्री हरगोबिंद साहिब जी 52 देसी राजाओं को कैद से छुड़वा कर ग्वालियर से अमृतसर लाए थे।

दीपावली से 2 दिन पहले धनतेरस मनाई जाती है। इस दिन लोग नए बर्तन खरीदना शुभ समझते हैं ।अगले दिन छोटी दीपावली मनाई जाती है। लोग घरों और दुकानों की सफाई करते हैं। तीसरे दिन दीपावली मनाई जाती है। घर और बाजार सजाए जाते हैं। लोग मिठाई और पटाखे खरीदते हैं ।रात को घर में दीपमाला की जाती है और लक्ष्मी पूजन होता है।

बच्चे फुलझड़ियां , पटाखे और आतिशबाजी चलाते हैं तथा मिठाई खाते हैं। चौथे दिन गोवर्धन पूजा होती है पांचवे दिन भैया दूज मनाई जाती है । बहनें अपने भाइयों को टीका लगाती हैं।

कुछ लोग दीपावली वाले दिन जुआ भी खेलते हैं ।
यह एक सामाजिक बुराई है और बुरी आदत है । इसका अंत होना चाहिए । कई स्थानों पर असावधानी से पटाखे जलाने से आग लग जाती है और बहुत नुकसान हो जाता है । दीपावली पर्व हर्षोल्लास का त्यौहार है इसे हमें सावधानी और उचित तरीके से मनाना चाहिए
