Why do many teachers defend large amounts of homework

There is are two ways in which I could answer it first negative and second positive. so let's start with the negative answer.

because most of the teacher hate us. and consider us an ugly faced monster in their life. Who is so stupid that it keeps asking same doubt again and AGAIN !!!

I think teachers give us a large amount of homework because they want us to have a better and bright future. they will give us the assignment with a deadline to prepare us adulthood and college ( wow, am really good at buttering ).
